There are many nicknames that Florida has come to go by over the many years since it was founded in April of 1513. the most popular of course is the Sunshine State, with the Alligator State coming in a close second. Both of these nicknames reference two of Florida’s most popular state offerings, one being the beautiful beaches and sunshine that grace the state, and the other being the vast alligator population.
The name Sunshine state, which has become associated with Florida, comes from the high amounts of sunshine the state receives every year and also the high levels of tourism. On average Florida receives about 2927 hours of sunshine per year and temperatures can reach into the 100s on a given summers day. This makes a trip to the beach the perfect solution to cooling down. The waters are always refreshing and a welcome sight, especially in the middle of the afternoon when temperatures reach their peak for the day. When many people think of Florida they see the sunshine, crisp blue water, white sandy beaches, and the beautiful palm tree vegetation.
Another picture people see when thinking of Florida is the sight of a swamp with moss, frogs, and alligators. this other side of Florida earns it the name the Alligator State with the alligator population at an estimated 1.25 million. Though alligator’s brains are about the size of a quarter they are still fascinating creatures to witness in their natural habitat. These creatures, that have been made out to be vicious monsters by Hollywood, only like prey that can be consumed in one bite. They can only be found in freshwater areas and dislike high amounts of salt in their food which is another reason they shy away from humans as prey. This part of Florida can be seen from anywhere in the state including some Florida resident’s backyards. Talk about a scary neighbor!
